Apologies once more for the lack of posting. Those of you who know will realise that the day job has been pretty hectic over the last few weeks.

There are now only 5 days to go until the launch of the new Tory Radio website - so there is something to look forward to.

To mark the launch I will be publishing an interview a did a while ago with what you might describe as a professional family man who lived in a marginal seat that went Conservative in the last election. It make for fascinating listening as to hos perspective on how the Conservative party has changed - and what more he would like to see if he is to be convinced to vote Conservative.

The next upcoming attraction will be a superb interview with Tim Loughton. It's one of those where you wish you had twice as much time to into much more depth on some of the questions. Maybe we will be able to convince Tim to make a return visit to Tory Radio!

Goldilocks and the three trains

I thought I would share the comments what someone who works for one of the train operating companies this weekk. When one passenger politely enquired as to why they couldnt manage to provide enough rolling stock time and time again, he said it was the weather.

"Our trains don't like it when it's too hot or too cold"

Embattled Blair

Two pieces in the Guardian go some way to highlight what Labour MPs think of their leader at the moment.

In a letter to the editor Peter Kilfoyle, writing on the subject of fundraising , writes...."Is it little wonder that Labour party activists have given up in droves. They expect a higher purpose in their leaders."

And then what about former Health Secretary, Frank Dobson, who writes, "That's why the sooner he goes, the better for the Labour party and the country...."

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Having had the opportunity to live in the States as a child gave me the chance to visit various places I would never have otherwise seen.

One visit that sticks in the memory is visiting Thomas Eddison's House - the man widely acknowledged to have invented the light bulb. If memory serves me correctly the light bulbs in his house have never been replaced and are still working!

If a story in the Mail on Sunday is to believed, Government is pushing to encourage people to use energy saving bulbs (such as the one pictured here). Now surely this is to be welcomed, but then you hear how they are thinking of doing it.

They aren't trying to lowed the cost of energy saving bulbs - no - they want to tax less efficent ones.

So the Government who give people like my Nanas money in the form of her Winter fuel allowance, will now be taking it back off her by raising the price of normal bulbs. Is this really the best way to encourage us to be more energy efficient?

Well what a day for Tory Radio! Being flagged up on the BBC website certainly drove some traffic. And the articles om the Telegraph and Guradian website all helped. It was Brendan Carlin at the Telegraph who first picked up on the Lord Tebbit interview.

Then on the way home from a busy week in London I saw the interview being mentioned in the Evening Standard and also in their editorial. Its a pity they didnt manage to say Tory Radio conducted the interview isn't it.

Anyway, in between wlaking to towm, doing the shopping, painting my front door and trying to get my house in some sort of order so that it can go on the market, I am about to put together the interview I did with Ken Clarke - which will go online on Monday. Another fascinating "subject" to talk with for half an hour.

Tebbit talks to Tory Radio

It takes a lot to make me me lost for words but today it happened.

I don't know what I expected when I knew I was going to meet Lord Tebbit. Here was a figure who was invovled in politics at the highest level when I was a lad. Here was a man who was a key member of the Thatcher Government. Here was a man who took on the Unions and won.

Here was a man who told me not to tell his secretary that he had forgotten he was meeting me, or he would get in trouble.

Here was a man who when I asked him if there was any decision he could change in his political career, he said to me that he would change his marginal decision whether on the Thursday evening of the party conference in 1984 he would to stay on in Brighton to be on the platform hte next day for the Prime Minister's speech rather than as hed been thinking, nipping off early and going home.

That really puts life into perspective doesn't it!

The two part interview I have just been putting together is a real insight into Lord Tebbit and what he stands for. It will probably be quite an eye opener to those who only know him by whats written about the man.

The Sin of Private property?

Now there aren't many things that annoy me - but one of them is any criticism of people who have done well for themselves - or indeed are trying to.

I am suddenly being made to feel I have committed an awful sin for having two houses. Now before you think I am some wealthy land owner – it is all due to circumstances . Those circumstances were that I had the luck of meeting my future wife – and she had a house in Newark and I have one in Chesterfield.

Now we both have considerable mortgages, but would certainly like to sell one and finally be able to live together. BUT what if I chose to live in one house and keep the other empty as an investment for a year? As long as I kept it in good repair why shouldn’t I be able to do just that? I have made huge sacrifices to buy it. I have taken the risk of taking a mortgage. What gives the Government the right to deem that they should be able to effectively steal my property from me.

If you look at the estate I live on (under three years old) you may see that Government would be better placed looking at other issues that need solving. The houses owned privately, some of which are rented out are all great little properties. The communal grassed areas are appalling as no one looks after them. Doesn’t this highlight one of the virtues of private ownership? People have a tendency to look after things they own more than things they don’t.

Then you have to look at the problems on the estate brought about by Government policy. Not enough parking spaces – as guidance is to provide a maximum opposed to minimum parking provision (unless someone can correct me). What effect does this have? Well it doesn’t encourage people out of their cars – as there is absolutely no public transport that passes through the estate. It means people brick over their front gardens – or park on the pavement.

Before you start to introduce policies to penalize home owners – perhaps Government would be better off solving some of the problems that already exist due to their own policies.

I had the opportunity to ask Matthew d'Ancona, Editor of the Spectator, how influential did he think blogging and podcasting are in politics at the moment, and was he a regular reader or listener of any blogs or podcasts in particular?

Matthew commented, "I think blogging and podcasting are re-shaping politics completely. In the Tory world, the defining moment was last year’s leadership contest when the campaign blogs – official and unofficial – became indispensable. They were used to “seed” stories, and they were often way ahead of the mainstream media. Sites such as your own and Conservativehome.com have the potential to be very influential indeed."

Department of Transport Guidance

Due to the nature of the quality of driving in England the Department of Transport has now devised a new scheme in order to identify poor drivers and give good drivers the opportunity to recognise them whilst driving.For this reason as from the middle of May 2006 those drivers who are found to be driving badly which includes:

-overtaking in dangerous places
-hovering within one inch of the car in front
-stopping sharply
-speeding in residential areas
-pulling out without indication
-performing U turns inappropriately in busy high streets
-under taking on motorways
-taking up more than one lane in multi lane roads

These drivers will be issued with flags, white with a red cross, signifying their inability to drive properly. These flags must be clipped to a door of the car and be visible to all other drivers and pedestrians. Those drivers who have shown particularly poor driving skills will have to display a flag on each side of the car to indicate their greater lack of skill and general lower intelligence mindset to the general public.

Please circulate this to as many other motorists as you can so that drivers and pedestrians will be aware of the meaning of these flags.

Too few convictions... too many in jail?

Convictions too few - Goldsmith
Conviction rates for serious offences such as wounding and rape are too low, the Attorney General has admitted.

Lord Goldsmith said victims had a right to be worried but the government was working to tackle the problem and more offenders were being taken to court

Too many in jail, says top judge
Far too many people are being imprisoned in England and Wales, the country's top judge has warned. Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips told the Guardian that offenders should be rehabilitated in the community, and be sent to jail only as a last resort.

It clearly isn't just Tory Radio that has some interesting stories on it. On the way home I was listening to the radio and the following story (paraphrased) just beggars belief.

A failed asylum seeker (point 1) crashed his uninsured car (point 2) and then jumped bail (point 3). Apparently he cant be deported (point 4) so the authorities will keep an eye on him (point 5).

Is it me? Am I unreasonable? BUT.... aren't there 5 reasons to be pretty outraged about this?

What would happen if I didn't have insurance?
What if I jumped bail?
Would I be allowed to stay in a country like the US without a work permit?
Would I be put in jail after point 2 and 3???

The latest podcast featuring Party Chairman Francis Maude certainly attracted quite a bit of publicity as the articles from The Times, The Evening Standard and The Telgraph Show.

Was it really newsworthy what Francis Maude was saying? Basically he seemed to be saying the party wanted to ensure the right candidates would be selected for the right seats.

Makes sense to me. What do you think?

The following interview was recorded towards the end of March (if my memory serves me correctly). Andrew Turner MP is currently Shadow Charities Minister and MP for the Isle of Wight. He first fought the Isle of WIght in 1997, failed to win - stuck around and defeated a Lib Dem incumbent in 2001. He now has a five figure majority which is a testimony to what a campaigner he is.

With the bank holiday season upon us and thosands rushing off on holiday in their cars on trains and even flying abroad, I can think of no better time to hear from Shadow Secretay of State for Transport, Chis Grayling MP. I was lucky enough to interview him a few weeks ago, and we discussed some of the issues which are clearly going to have to be addressed if our transport system isn't going to experience gridlock.

The interview will be published this Tuesday (and we are expecting no unforseen delays due to leaves on the audio tracks). In the meantime if you experience any bank holiday horror travel stories do let us know. My favourite is always the miles of cones with no workmen!

Jonathan Sheppard (of ToryRadio fame) is running the London Marathon to raise funds for an asthma charity. He will be passing through five target wards for the local Conservatives in the May 4th elections and refuses to deliver a single leaflet to help his colleagues in their hour of need. Talk about narrow focus and missing the bigger picture! Well, if he thinks he'll get a penny out of me he can take another 26 mile running jump. I certainly shan't be clicking here to sponsor him.

Tory Radio was pleased to get a mention in the latest edition of Podcast User Magazine

Our little claim to fame reads as follows:-

Many politcians have taken advantage of podcasting to spread the message, and charities have too. Greenpeace, for example, use podcasting in the hope of raising campaign awareness. Much of this narrowcast podcasting, however is uninspirational stuff: the London Labour party merely broadcasts unchallenging, bland interviews with local MPs, and George Bush's podcast is another way to access his existing weekly state radio address. But some projects such as the newly launched Tory Radio (http://www.toryradio.com run by an activist from the British Conservative party) will aim to be an influential voice from within the party in a way not previously possible. It could end up just being a mouthpiece for the party leadership, but has the potential to be a thorn in the side of spin doctors and give those of a similar political persuasion a clearer idea of what happens in Westminster.

Now who would have put Labour, unchallenging, bland and MPs in the same sentence!

Dentistry disgrace

A British Dental Association has suggested 1 in 10 dentists has rejected their new NHS contract.

This position was confirmed when I received a letter from my dentist. According to this person,

Due to continued confusion over the implementation of new NHS procedures, it is with great regret that after thirty three years of providing dentistry within the NHS, twenty seven of those in (town deleted to protect privacy), as at the end of March 2006 I am no longer able to continue with NHS dentistry.

I am one of the lucky ones. I have registered with a different NHS dentist and will be going back for NHS treatment next month. I am lucky even though it took me a year to find an NHS dentist.

Others are not so lucky.

ID cards to be compulsory

According to BBC News Online

"ID cards may become compulsoryIdentity cards will be made compulsory if Labour wins the next election, Home Secretary Charles Clarke has said.

Under the current scheme all passport applicants from 2008 will have to get an ID card - although there will be a brief opt-out period until 2010.

But Mr Clarke said he plans legislation after the next election to make it compulsory for everyone to get a card, whether or not they have a passport"

Perhaps the person at Labour HQ who finds this site so interesting would care to comment on this move by Charles Clarke?

After only two "broadcasts" Tory Radio has been nominated for an award in the New Statesman's New Media Awards 2006. We have been nominated in the innovation category, and are one of eleven other hopefuls, including Guido and the Monkey.

I won't be drafting my acceptance speech just yet!

First the bad news. Unfortunately Bernard Jenkin wasnt available to chat about how the A list has been working - though he has said he would be more than happy to be interviewed in the very near future.

But here comes the good news - on Tuesday I will be recording two interviews!! One with Chris Grayling who seems to be making a habit of claiming Government scalps, and then it will be my honour to interview former leader of the party, Iain Duncan Smith.

(Unfortunately the first interview won't "go live" until Thursday due to me having to earn a crust - but you know it will be worth waiting for!)

The Independent on Sunday ran a nice piece on this humble little podcast todauy. It reads as follows, ".....Following David Cameron's lead of doing a podcast for The DailyTelegraph the Conservative old guard is jumping on the band wagon. Iain Duncan Smith and Michael Howard have both signed up to be interviewed on web based Tory Radio. IDS's podcast is due out on Tuesday (do remember to turn up the volume on your iPods), with Howard following in the near future. Cameron is also planning an appearance. "His office is trying to find a slot in his diary," says Tory Radio founder Jonathan Sheppard."

VOTE TORY RADIO

Whilst podcasting is just taking off (certainly in the political world) here in Britain, the US certainly seemed to have embraced this technology.

But wouldn't it be nice for us Brits to show the rest of the world that we are prepared to compete with the best of them. There is a website called Podcast Alley which I would urge all of you to visit. Each month it lists the top 10 podcasts in the world. Currently to get into the top ten it seems like you only need 500 votes (as of March 21st). Each month the voting starts again and listeners have to vote for their favourite podcasts.

So, not for the first time in my life Im asking you to lend me your vote. If you could click here, type Tory Radio into the search of podcasts and vote for the show as your favourite. Lets see how far we can go up those charts!
